Lubrication advice

Conveyors exist in a variety of types, sizes and configurations from overhead trolley systems to floor mounted (above or undergound drive chain systems). All of these conveyors depend upon the efficient lubrication of their chains, drives, rollers, bearings and guides in order to ensure their efficient operation and long life. The choice of lubricant depends upon many different factors including speed, load, desired lubrication intervals and the environment in which the conveyor is working.
In order to ensure the best lubricant is used in a particular application, we must consider all of these elements for each specific installation.
We should also consider other factors including:

  • The working temperature range of the conveyor. Typical operating temperatures vary within a range of -30°C to 250°C however in exceptional circumstances, they may go as far down as -60°C or up to temperatures greater than 300°C. The choice of the correct lubrication is critical.

  • Load and speed of operation: A highly loaded bearing requires a very different lubricant from bearings in a high speed conveyor.
  • Potential for contamination or lubricant transfer to the conveyor components for example; the heat-treated parts or when the conveyor is intended for painting, powder coating or cataphoresis processes.
  • Maintenance costs; sometimes it is more efficient to use a higher quality - higher value lubricant with extended re-lubrication intervals rather than a conventional lubricant applied continually. In dusty working environments, the considerations may be the reverse.
  • The type of application method, whether manually or automatically applied. These factors are critical to the efficiency of the equipment and choice of lubricant according to the restraints to the lubrication system installed.

IKV TRIBOLOGIE has gathered much experience over many years in this application area and supplies conveyor lubricants world-wide. Our experience and reputation together with the recommendations of Original Equipment Manufacturers is a warranty for our customers for the best choice of lubricants and the skill of an experienced team of tribological engineers.

IKV TRIBOLOGIE engineers are available to advise you on lubrication frequencies, dosage rates and methods of application. Our engineers keep track of the installations, we can monitor the lubricants in service at regular intervals and define correct intervals for regenerating the lubrication film to best suit the application and environment.
